Sciaphobia – The Fear of Shadows
-Between 2 a.m. and 3:14 a.m., Thanksgiving or 2007, Penn Station, Main Hall-

While waiting for the last train back to Queens in Penn Stations Main Hall, where waiting patrons stare impatiently at the large multi-colored Departure Screen, a heated (and quite drunken) debate raged through the hall. It was a discussion not anticipated by anyone waiting for his or her train on this Holiday. It was Thanksgiving and I know for damn sure you weren’t supposed to be having an angry debate on the following subject: Which ethnic group were the bigger (and I quote) “White n***ers” of Europe, the Jewish or the Irish.
This bigotry was spewing out of a Jewish-American young man, and an Irish-American young woman. Clearly these two, where very assimilated into American society, possibly three generations or more, so it was pretty fucking weird that they defending their own claims to ethnicity so heavily.
Of course, as I always do when either strange or beautiful vibrate the air, I began recording. “Irish people ate their children!” the man shouted. She responded shouting, “Jews murdered Christians and used their blood to make matzos!” My jaw dropped with awe. I had never heard something so fucking stupid in my entire life (nor had I heard any of these ridiculous accusations). I joined a few other spectators, half-laughing half-disgusted. After the woman laid something fierce into him, the man suddenly stood up rigidly, red faced with rage, slammed a payphone and shouted “GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY FACE MOTHER FUCKER! YOU TRYIN’ TO GET CRAZY WITH ME BRO?! YOU TRYIN TO BE CRAZY?! FUCK YOU!”

Happy Thanksgiving.
