Schematomancy (Divination using the human form)
-Midday, Summer ‘08 at Nassau Coliseum-
I had the pleasure of meeting the warmhearted Louisianan saxophonist Derek Houston. I caught him as he walked off after his set carrying a beautifully worn 1928 tenor sax. We talked about music for a bit, and I explained how I was working a wildly diverse album that needed some of that sweet 1929 tenor sax. I asked him if he would be interested in recording a part I wrote for a bugged out song. He agreed with enthusiasm and we headed to his dressing room. The room was one of the Islander locker rooms, but during the summer it was normally fashioned into dressing rooms for acts that performed that night. We found the perfect sound in shower chamber and recorded a few takes of the melody I showed him. It came out better than any recording I’ve made on such short notice. It really seemed to carry a great energy with it that epitomized the track.
